Advent is the beginning of the Church year—a season of watching, waiting, and preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ. The word Advent means “arrival,” and the Church keeps this season by remembering Christ’s first coming at Bethlehem, welcoming His presence now in Word and Sacrament, and longing for His coming again in glory.
Historically, Advent has been a penitential season—a “little Lent”—marked by prayer, repentance, fasting, and acts of charity. The Scripture readings in the early weeks of Advent focus on Christ’s return and the call to readiness, then move to the preaching of John the Baptist and the promises of the Messiah in the prophets.
In the Anglo-Catholic tradition, Advent is kept with simplicity and quiet expectation: subdued colors, contemplative hymns, and a renewed emphasis on confession, daily prayer, and spiritual discipline.
Above all, Advent proclaims that Christ has come, Christ comes to us now, and Christ will come again.
It is a season of holy anticipation—preparing our hearts to meet the Lord with joy.
